LED Facial Therapy – What Is It?

Ever wondered how LED light-based facials became the next Insta-worthy skin treatment? How can shining different shades of light on your face be the solution to all your skin problems?

LED Therapy – what’s that?

LED was originally used to help NASA astronauts repair skin and tissue healing. In space, astronauts’ cells stop regenerating as there is no oxygen and sunlight, and hence if they got cut or bruised, their skin would not be able to heal. By using LED therapy, astronauts were able to heal their bodies if they ever met with an accident in space.

In recent times, LED treatments have branched out into the beauty market with a focus on treating skin issues. LED Therapy has been proven to treat a slew of skin problems in various peer-reviewed and prestigious clinical research papers.

How does LED Facial Therapy work?

LED stands for light-emitting diode. LED Therapy uses a multitude of light wavelengths to activate the skin’s self-healing function. As the light wavelength goes up, so does the depth of penetration. Your skin receptors absorbs the light particles and converts it into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy that powers your cells. ATP is then used to power metabolic processes that repairs and regenerates skin cells. To give an example, fibroblast cells increases collagen production that reduces fine lines and wrinkles on the skin.

Different shades of light triggers a different cellular response in your skin. Those include treating acne-prone skin, controlling sebum secretion, stimulating collagen production and reducing wrinkles.

LED therapy does not use UV light, hence it is completely safe – and no, you won’t get tanned!

Which LED color is best for you?

Red

On the lighter end of the spectrum, red light reduces redness and soothes irritation. Red light is great for minimizing scarring and lightening spots, as deeper shades penetrate as deep as 6mm into the skin to stimulate skin repair at a cellular level. The end result? Softer and more elastic skin!

Suitable for all skin types

Green

Green light targets pigmentation, dark eye circles and dilated or broken capillaries. It inhibits excess melanin production by acting against melanocytes (cells that form melanin). Green light is effective in treating dark spots, scars and uneven skin tone, hence it is highly recommended if you suffer from hyperpigmentation, melasma and vitiligo.

Suitable for skin with hyperpigmentation

Yellow

Yellow light promotes lymphatic circulation, increase levels of oxygen supply to cells and boosts the overall immune system. The result is decreased irritation and more radiant skin. Yellow light also stimulates the nervous system and tissue cells, hence it has a lifting and firming effect on sagging skin.

Suitable for mature, sensitive and irritated skin

Blue

Blue light has anti-bacterial properties and is a brilliant treatment for acne, as it kills pimple-causing bacteria. Blue light also detoxes the skin and regulates oil secretion.

Suitable for oily, acne skin

Purple

Purple light is a combination of red and blue light, and it works to improve blood circulation, remove toxins and decreases inflammation. As such, purple light is recommended as a follow-up therapy to promote wound healing after aggressive, invasive skin treatments such as lasers, fillers and Botox.

Suitable for sensitive skin

How to have a safe and enjoyable LED Facial Therapy session

If you haven’t tried LED treatments before, the most important thing to remember is to keep your eyes closed! LED light is not necessarily dangerous, but it is very bright and could irritate your eyes. People who have recently had eye surgeries may also be unsuitable for this treatment.

If you happen to be taking certain antibiotics, frequently have migraines or suffer from epilepsy, it might be best to avoid LED facial therapy.

In short, LED facial therapy is a non-invasive and painless treatment with no downtime, and best of all – it’s suitable for all skin types! However don’t be too quick to rejoice – the results are progressive, in other words you won’t be able to see long term results from just one LED treatment session.
